Meet the Board of Directors

Our board is made up of float home residents and marina owners/operators and others from across British Columbia. Board members are elected by the membership each year at the AGM and volunteer their time to further the interests of this unique lifestyle.

President

I grew up on Air Force bases in Alberta and began my career as a lab technician, specializing in immunology and virology for 25 years. I traveled across North America, teaching new techniques for detecting viruses and immune diseases. About 12 years ago, I transitioned to real estate. Due to a shoulder and hip injury, I’m currently on leave but plan to return once I’ve fully recovered.

I’m a retired hospital dentist living on a floating home in Sea Village on Granville Island in Vancouver, with my psychologist wife and our twins. We embrace the joys of float home living with our two dogs. In addition to family life, I’m a part-time skipper with Aquabus, operating small passenger ferries around False Creek.

Treasurer

I’ve spent my life immersed in the world of Canadian universities—first as a student, then as a faculty member, researcher, and administrator. I also bring valuable experience from serving on various boards, including university Boards of Governors and provincial and private sector boards. For the past 10 years, I’ve called a float home on Westham Island in Delta my residence and have proudly served on the Board of the Floating Home Association of BC since 2020.

Director

I'm a retired SFU Biology Professor, where I specialized in the study of marine species including  salmon, sharks and marine mammals. My wife and I and Digby, our duck tolling retriever, live in Salish Seaside Marina in Esquimalt (formerly Westbay Marina), where we retired in 2007. I've spent most of my life on the water in one way or another. Recently, I've been active in our local floathome owners association, and look forward to contributing to broader issues of importance to floathome residents Province wide.

Jan New

Director

I've spent most of my adult life near or on the water—sailboats, boathouses, and floating homes—which has fostered a deep respect for the ocean and concern for its health. After a career in healthcare philanthropy in London and Vancouver, I now enjoy retirement with my husband, David, and dog, LuLu, in our floating home at Mosquito Creek Marina. When not sailing local waters, I love hiking the North Shore mountains, continuing to connect with nature and the water that has shaped my life.

Members of the BCFHA are grateful to live, work, and be in relation with people from across many traditional and unceded territories, covering all regions of British Columbia. We acknowledge that we are settlers and live on this water and land, and are committed to reconciliation, decolonization, and building relationships in our communities and lives.
